Jeanette Jones Artist Profile by Intern Hannah Smith

Jeanette Jones is a Seattle Artist who grew up in Daytona Beach Florida, who is drawn to the stories of women in history. She creates the portraits with bold outlines of colorful spaces which are filled with flowers and other objects. Some of her paintings look like stained glass because of the lines, the rich color, and the contrast between the different spaces. In some of her past works she had painted Frida Kahlo and Georgia O’Keefe.

In her show I feel bad for you? she has created a series of portraits of Pablo Picasso’s mistresses and wives. After reading a biography about Picasso, Jones was inspired by the tragic ends of Marie Therese, Dora Maar and his other conquests. Picasso manipulated, mistreated, and tossed away many women destroying their self confidence causing them to kill themselves. Her paintings beautifully capture the melancholy of the women, and the crossing lines enhance the feeling of brokenness.

Jeanette Jones’ work tells stories about different women whose naiveté about love caused their ultimate downfalls.

Pet Shop

According to the 2009/2010 National Pet Owners Survey, 62% of U.S. households own a pet,
which equates to 71.4 millions homes. Artist Sara Everett explores this
culture of household animals through oil painted portraiture. The show
features an assortment of creatures one would find in a traditional pet
shop, from birds & fish to rats & cats, including some
kinetically interactive works that blend her oil paintings with
animation.

Picasso's relationships were complex. His women were manipulated and broken, in
life and on canvas. Nevertheless they willfully drew towards him thus
becoming immortal. Admittedly from a place of naïveté, Jeanette Jones
asks the question "I feel bad for you?"

La Familia Goes to Finland!

Last week, 16+ La Familia Artists packed up a series of works and bid them farewell.
From April 20 - May 22, 2010, these works will exhibit as a group show at Gallery Golden Point in Nummela, Finland. Curated by La Familia artist, Mirka Hokkanen, this show is an extension of La Familia Gallery's recent international exposition initiative, which also includes a show exhibition at Arte Monaco from April 29 - May 2, 2010.

Profile: Arte Monaco

From April 29th to May 2nd, 2010 Monaco's 35,000 square foot Diaghilev Exhibition Hall of the renowned Grimaldi Forum will be transformed into a giant art gallery for Arte Monaco, 2010 Special Edition. Hosting 100 exhibitors from around the globe, the four day festival will kick off with a VIP reception on April 29th will kick off the event, followed by three full days of vernissage-style exhibits open to the public.

Art Monaco 2010 - Special Edition is a fine arts exhibit and will showcase pieces from a variety of artistic forms of expression, including acrylic painting, oil painting, watercolor painting, sculpture, photography and mixed media. The Selection Committee is comprised of esteemed figures from the international cultural scene, and will be responsible for the selection of all pieces to be displayed.

The Grimaldi Forum Monaco is built on Monaco's waterfront, adjacent to the Japanese Garden is located in the Larvotto (east of the Principality). Vast yet intimate, spectacular and modern, the Grimaldi Forum Monaco gives life to a new generation of cultural events - pushing out walls, overcoming constraints, imagining spaces to be modeled, that is the primary “raison d’être” of a unique place where each day everything can be reinvented anew.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall at La Familia Gallery on March 19th! The Gallery's band, Latitude x Longitude will be opening for Toy Box Trio as they serenade us with "New Classical Music with a Carnival Flair."

Toy Box Trio recently earned some well-placed top-hat-tipping from Sepiachord, who describe them as, "intimate retro-future circus music, transforming baroque sounds into a stranger version of 'The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy'."

We can hardly wait to see what the evening will bring. Gentlemen, start your accordions!

This boutique international art fair will host only 100 privately invited galleries from around the world and La Familia is one of about 5 from the US.

Even better than that, if you poked your head in to be hypnotized by our Steampunk tales of murder, escape and mayhem you would have seen Brad Strain of Scared of Genre Films shooting video of the performance. Strain's filming and editing work beautifully combines gritty and polished, and the impeccable sounds, as captured by Travis M. Anderson fall in the category of "stunning."

Kate Protage is on a mission: to give people more opportunities to collect art that speaks to them, that’s also affordable and accessible. She challenged ten notable Seattle artists to “think big by creating small.” How do their concepts and styles translate to a small-scale format? Come see the results in March at the Twilight Artist Collective in West Seattle.

Gallery Director takes the stage with music legends

This past Sunday La Familia Gallery Music Director, Rebeqa Rivers, took to the Showbox in the Market stage to join an epically star-studded lineup for the Hootenanny For Haiti benefit concert. Jam-packed with shredding solos from greats like Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) and Duff McKagen (Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver, Loaded) the concert was set up living-room style, giving the feel of a cozy family jam. Some of Seattle's finest put on one helluva hootenanny at Showbox at the Market to help victims of the earthquake that devastated Haiti in January.

A hootenanny by definition is pretty much an informal participatory musical gathering of friends and family where everyone either plays instrument or sings along to their favorite songs. And that's exactly what was delivered Sunday night right down to the stage decor, which included several couches and votive candles for lighting.

The show had a very casual down home feel but this was no family jamboree. The musicians on stage were some of the biggest stars Seattle has contributed to rock 'n' roll including Mike McCready, Duff McKagan, Matt Cameron and Kim Warnick to name a few. It was like you were being invited into a living room of local legends for a jam session in the form of a near three-hour concert that contained so many major players from the local music scene, both past and present, that all of them couldn't be contained on the stage. It was an awesome mix of the old guard teaming up with some of the city's fastest-rising talent for an unforgettable night.

"People often ask Seattle band Latitude x Longitude to describe their unique sound, because as vocalist Rebeqa Rivers can attest, it's not exactly categorizable. But after giving it much thought, Rivers says Steampunk seemed perfect. No doubt once giving them a listen that seems pretty accurate. Rivers' gorgeous voice is layered over mandolin and toy piano sounds, as well as Spencer Smith's guitar and sometimes drums. They even have a visual artist as an official member of the band: Michelle Anderst. From the bands press page: "Paired with LxL's inquisitive lyrics,
Anderst examines the patterns and elegance of the machinery, anatomy, flora, and fauna that surround everyday life."

"The band's interest in the visual arts can be traced to Rivers' sister, Lanae Rivers-Woods, who has an art gallery in Seattle called La Familia. The sisters were manning the gallery's booth at Aqua Art Miami hosted by GenArt recently in Miami. With Anders' art on display, Latitude x Longitude music playing, and the rest of La Familia's art on exhibit, it was the

Photographer Harry Woods shares a bit about his experience at the Alaska Residence:

Alaska has changed my life. I come from a small country town where - believe it or not - the land is all used up. There are farms everywhere, people everywhere, or businesses everywhere. There was no escape.

Often times we repeat the daily routines of life, go to work, watch tv, eat and sleep. It's impossible to find a minute to yourself to even consider that life could be different.

Luckily, there is a place where life slows down, the view is amazing, and the people are down to earth. That place is Alaska. More then once, it has given me the chance to connect with my life and my creativity in a way I've never found in the lower 48.

I was told once that anybody could be a great photographer in Alaska, mostly because anywhere you aim your going to get a great image. Almost a true story.

With this in mind, we are inviting you to apply for a great alaskan artist residence. Others have tried it and they all agree, alaska will change you.

LA FAMILIA GALLERY INVITES YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN A SPECIAL ONLINE FUNDRAISING EVENT.

As artists, we’re asked to donate our work to a variety of causes. This month, the artists of La Familia are donating the sales of our work to support our fellow artists, and the growth of our cooperative gallery.

Aqua Art Miami, a key satellite show of Art Basel, is a selectively juried exhibition that’s an incredible opportunity for emerging artists to expand their reach to the international art scene. The artists of La Familia Gallery have been invited to participate in the 2009 Aqua Art Miami exhibition, and we need your help to get there!

This is your chance to bid on pieces from your favorite La Familia artists and potentially collect them for less than regular gallery prices. Of course, you can always stake your claim on a piece and “buy it now” as well!

AUCTION GUIDELINES

1. Click on the images below to see the work that’s for sale.
2. RSVP for the event if you'd like to bid, so that you have the ability to make comments.
3. The caption below each piece contains all of the information you’ll need to make a bid, including: end date for each individual auction, minimum bid, suggested bidding increments and a “Buy It Now” price.
4. Place your bid as a “comment” below the image of the piece that you want.
5. Each auction will last 5 days. If you choose to “Buy It Now,” the auction for that piece ends immediately after the “Buy It Now” bid is placed. Otherwise, at 5pm PST on the end of the 5th day, the highest bid wins the piece.
6. We will contact the winners of each individual auction to discuss the steps for payment. Please be prepared to pay within 48 hours; otherwise, artwork will be go to the next bidder down, or be put back into the auction. La Familia Gallery accepts cash, check or credit card.
7. All sales are final.
8. Auction prices do not include shipping costs. If necessary, artwork can be shipped via UPS; costs will be added to the total cost of the work based on size, weight and destination.

Hello artists and La Familia Gallery denizens! My name is Amanda Boyle and I am the new gallery intern! I have lived in Seattle for about 2 years, spending the majority of my youth in boot-scooting, art-loving Austin, Texas. Within no time at all, I began to appreciate the fabulousness that is First Thursday Art Walk in Pioneer Square. I became addicted to the freshness of new ideas, and the jumble of art-types, sculptors, hipsters and painters alike. In particular, I took keen notice of La Familia’s variety of artists and its professional approach to dealing with clients.
With the gallery, I will be helping out wit a range of projects, from public relations, to helping out with gallery events/openings, to tying up any loose strings. I look forward to learning many new things about the art gallery business from La Familia, and I hope to meet many of you in the coming months. Happy creating!

Painter Chris White, who is opening at La Familia this week in the North Gallery, took 1st Place this month in the 41st Annual Arts Exhibition at the Visual Arts Society of Texas. Those of you who spend a lot of time at La Familia will recognize the work as one that has been in our Salon area this year. An all around staff favorite.

We were already impressed when LFG artist Jason Stauffer had two works accepted into SEAF since over 2,000 works were submitted and only just over 500 accepted. However, it just got better when Jerry Slipman (owner Pacini Luble Gallery), Jena Scott (Director of ArtREsource Gallery), and Marita Holdaway (owner of Benham Gallery) selected "Wishmaker" as Best in Show.2009.

Now works from both of Jason's shows at La Familia have won outside recognition. We are truly happy for him and look forward to what he will bring to us next.

* Members can choose to have work on hand year round and displayed in the La Familia Gallery Salon. This benefit alone is substantial. Instead of having your work on display only one month a year, collectors have constant access to members work.

The Responsibilities of Membership

When you join La Familia Gallery you make a commitment of your time and your passion. In order to be successful, members must be self-directed, organized, motivated, timely and creative. Each member is asked to participate in the creative community, attend member meetings and participate in events. When you submit your application you agree to all of the following terms.

* You are committed to one year of membership. No exceptions.

* All members pay a nonrefundable $50 fee at the time of joining. Monthly membership fees range from $88- $38 depending on which area of the gallery members choose to exhibit in.

* Members are expected to provide a complete and professional Artist Portfolio to be kept at La Familia during the duration of their membership.

* Members may incur other expenses such as providing wine or food for their own openings. These expenses are the choice and the responsibility of the member artist.

* Each member commits to sitting the gallery from 11:00am - 5:00pm seven days per year. Members unable to sit must provide a substitute, or pay an additional $40 per month.

* Members are required to attend monthly meetings. This time will be used to discuss gallery issues, concerns and projects. If you miss a meeting, you are responsible for reading meeting minutes, which are e-mailed.

* Each member is required to join at least one Development Group. These groups focus on such things as exhibition catalogues and events.

* Members are required to install and uninstall their own shows and prepare the space for the incoming artist. Each artist is required to provide all of the hardware and supplies required to complete their show.

2009 marks the 27th anniversary of the West Seattle Summer Fest! West Seattle Summer Fest is a FREE 3-day street fair, hosted by an organization of local area merchants, the West Seattle Junction Association. This years Festival dates are July 10th, 11th and 12th.

This is the second year the festival, in conjunction with Twilight Artist Collective and La Familia Gallery, will host the "Art Dive". The goal of Art Dive is to provide an affordable outlet for local artist and crafts people. The Art Dive tents are restricted to NW artists who produce their work within the country. Applicant approval is based primarily on type of art/craft to ensure diversity.

For $125 each artist will have use of one 2' x 8' table within the tent for the duration of the 3 day festival. Any additional display with have to be supplied by the artist and subject to the approval of the Art Dive organizers.

After we receive your complete application and $20, non-refundable, application fee you can expect this to happen:
*We will contact you to let you know if you've been approved or not.

Welcome to the La Familia Artist In Residence program, where artists find peace and respite from the modern world.

Originally acquired in 2000, the La Familia Artist Residence was opened to the public in 2008 as a unique opportunity for artist and art administrators to retreat, reflect, and recover from lives over-run by expectation and commercial expectations. The Residence is Jurored by the Directors of La Familia Gallery and a panel of professional artists. Artists are selected based on a combination of their skill and personal need.

It exists as a place for individuals in the arts to live with less: less stress, less noise, less technology, and less expectation. You live in a small village of approximately 600 people, the residence hosts only 2 – 4 guests at any given time, there is no TV, no internet, no franchise, no box stores, and no pressure to be anything beyond what you are.

Within the silence and the peace, you discover that what you need to create, what you need to live, and what you need to be truly happy is far less than you ever imagined.

Understand that the LFG Artist Residence is built on a minimalist concept. We are providing a retreat from the maddening crowd. We provide a place to escape the media, the press, the economy and the expectation of modern society. The home is modest, the space limited, the opportunity endless.

An Exploration of Narrative

Curated by Tim Parsley

Whether gathered around a campfire telling ghost stories, buried into an epic novel, or following the latest adventures of Spider-man, we are fascinated with stories, legends, myths and fables. Stories help locate us, form our personal identities and often operate as larger metaphors for reality. Throughout history, from the stately historic paintings of Jacques-Louis David to the provocative films of Matthew Barney, visual artists have offered a unique contribution to the telling of tales. Manifest Creative Research Gallery enthusiastically invited national and international artists, working in any visual creative medium, to come tell a story.

For this exhibition, a broad definition of narrative art was considered, including (but not limited to) comic art, sequential art, documentary, animation, video/film, illustration, performance, painting, sculpture, photography, and drawing.

Nearly 300 artists from 41 states and 14 countries submitted nearly 700 works for consideration to Mythography. A rigorous eight-person jury and curatorial process resulted in 16 works by 13 artists being selected for inclusion in the exhibit.

Juror's Introduction to the CVG 2009 ShowArtistic Director

CVG 2009: Juror's Introduction

It's easier to pick out the art we like than to explain why we like
it. Looking at my selections and awards for the CVG show, someone
might legitimately ask: Why this piece, and not that one? What makes
this work better, and that one worse?

Ultimately, the artworks that were selected for this exhibition had to
pass these three successive tests: Attraction, seduction, and reward.

First is always Attraction, because before anything else a piece has
to make us want to stop and look, to take the time to pick it out from
the flood of imagery that constantly vies for our attention. All the
pieces in this show have that "hook": a mood, a sense of light, a use
of color, some compelling combination of elements.

But simple attraction isn't enough. Attraction has to lead to
seduction, where a closer look reveals things which encourage us to
linger, things in the piece that make it worth exploring further,
things that hold our interest. It's possible to be attracted without
seduction, but we can't be seduced without being attracted.

Finally, the works in the show all offered a reward, the result of the
artist's strong object-making skills combined with the strong concept
behind the work. This is the most intellectual of the three tests,
and requires the successful integration of form and content - the
piece has to look the way it does for a reason, and that reason has to
be somehow apparent.

Kathy Liao's Best in Show self-portrait, In My Element, (shown below)
scored high on all three tests - the painter's searching eyes stop us
in our tracks, and once we pause the layers of painterly surface draw
us further in. Finally, we are rewarded by the powerful way the artist
merges her energetic, expressive brushwork with her striking presence.

Visitors to the CVG show can draw their own conclusions as to which
pieces past their own particular quality test - the good news is that
there are so many strong works to choose from.

A Gallery Full of Strong Pieces

On February 1st Collective Visions Art Gallery opens its annual juried
art exhibit, THE CVG SHOW '09 to the public. This year the show is
stock full of a wide range of artworks representing everything from
humor to the dark side of life. Process dominates several pieces
while content is the driving factor for other works. It is easy to
see the world through the artist's eye in this show and those views
are vastly different from one another.

Upon walking through the door and turning to the left, the visitor is
confronted by one of the largest paintings in the show absorbing the
wall on which it hangs. "In My Element," by Kathy Liao is an
oil-on-canvas self-portrait that does not shy away from the viewer's
gaze. Just around the corner, intimately tucked away, is "Hands of
the Fisherman #1," by Kit Tayor. This photograph is simultaneously
disturbing and exquisite and in its own quiet way is one of the
exhibit's standout works. Directly across from Taylor's photograph is
Eva Funderburgh's "Eating Plums," a petite ceramic monster that might
appear perfect in any setting. Funderburgh's beast has all the humor
of a children's storybook while hinting at a more private desire for
all things luscious. On the way down the stairs to the gallery space
below, it is important to stop and look up because the life size,
mixed media piece "Zebra" has its mosaic eyes on every passerby.
Raquel Stanek successfully brings out the joy of this piece while
forcing the obsessive nature of the process to the end of the line.

Downstairs houses several surprises. Among them is Brett Walker's
"Coffee Filter Hat," a digital C print that evokes both the amusing
and the frightening sides of existence. "Golden Fleece," by Dorothy
McGuinness is an abstract weaving made from watercolor paper, mizuhiki
and acrylic paint. Its bright yellow color contrasts with the,
obviously, time consuming repetitive motion of process to communicate
a vibrant, but steady sort of passion. Other artworks such as Randolf
Sill's "Miyazaki Teaparty," Caleb Brown's "Shark Drop" and Steve
Sauer's "Soul of the Rhino" all make this exhibit a must-see-show.

Having said that, there is one piece that makes getting out of the
house worth every bit of effort. "Last Stand," by Karen Rudd is not
only the smartest piece of art in the show, but also,
socio-politically speaking, one of the most currently relevant works
in the show. At a distance this piece looks like nothing more than a
tree trunk, but upon closer inspection it is made of, (I pause here to
consider not telling you, thereby saving the surprise, but...), scrap
pieces of recycled cardboard and glue. Nothing more.

Juror Gary Faigin, founder of the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, must
have had a hard time choosing the artworks for this year's CVG Show.
The abundance of strong pieces represented in the exhibit fills the
gallery and leaves one wondering how he managed the selection process
without becoming overwhelmed. Catalogues for the exhibit will be
available through the gallery.

In the Main Gallery: Oil paintings by Mattie Iverson, which explore space, distance, and emotion with paint and process. Each finished painting starts as a small study that was spontaneously created and then meticulously studied and recorded.

In the North Gallery: Mixed media by J. Gordon, who's work lies somewhere between painting and sculpture. Cement, clay, wax, and found objects are layered, then built up, worn down, and subjected to a variety of conditions before being finished with a layer of oil paint. Gordon's work creates a dialogue about decay and renewal, the constant give and take of life.
